For many Grand Junction residents, it’s not only their school that might be closed, but their church as well. The fate of St Brigid Catholic Church will finally be known this weekend following eight months of uncertainty.
St Brigid is on the list of possible closures announced last March as part of the Sioux City Diocese’s Ministry 2025 plan. The plan will reorganized the diocese in response to a declining number of ordained priests. Click here for an earlier post on GreeneCountyNewsOnline.
Father Jeff Schleisman, pastor of the Greene County Catholic cluster that includes St Brigid, St Joseph in Jefferson and St Columbkille in Churdan, said last Sunday that the priests of the diocese have seen the final Ministry 2025 plan. He said they were told to make no announcements until the diocese prepares statements. He said it would “most likely” be this coming weekend, Oct. 29-30.
Fr Schleisman said there have been many changes in the plan as it has gone through several drafts. “I can tell you this. Our cluster will significantly expand. It will include several more parishes, but I can’t tell you what direction it will expand to. You can just chew on that until next weekend…. Hopefully I can spell out the revised plan next weekend.”
